TfL Go: Plan, Pay, Travel

Regularly travel to the UK from the US and Ireland. I can’t believe the hoops one must jump through to register & top up my Oyster card (must have traveled in the past 8 weeks; must answer a stored security question; 2FA) — only to learn that you must also have a CC registered with a UK address, in order to add money. What??? I arrive in the city and have to make sure I have coinage for buses in order to rush around to find a tube station / ticket machine to manually load my card/check my balance? What a shame. Not sure how it is that London has got this so wrong. No such issues with the Dublin LEAP card top-up app & process, which is as easy as pie. UPDATE: Developer has responded saying I don’t require a UK-based CC to top up my Oyster card online/using the TFL app. I tried again today & received the same message as before: “Important We have detected an international address for your account. To purchase products on the Oyster online website, you must provide a UK billing address for the payment card you intend to use.” If there’s some way to get around this, I would love to have information on how to do so. Thanks.

Unfortunate for anyone who is planning a trip abroad that the purchase and account top-off features are only accessible to users within the UK. This is a fairly massive usability problem and one that could be architected around easily to maintain security.

End of the rainbow, you are required to provide a phone for dual factoring; No dice, when you have to roaming plan. App will not allow any other option regardless of hovering AI reply response sure to follow.

I have created an account and got in fine yesterday but unable to log in today. Also have contactless and need to consolidate 2 Oyster cards and can’t get in, cards not recognized, security issues etc

Use the app to navigate ended up having to change planes, change trains when it wasn’t planned referred over to a bus, but the bus was not running. Had to drop some serious money on an Uber due to poor information from the app.

Too many “security” blocks. I’m a legitimate user and consistently can’t log in even while in the UK and did not have a VPN running. I understand can’t access outside of UK but problems were while I was there.

You need to enhance that option beyond current day

I regularly go to the UK, from the US. Not being able to login to my card history from abroad is a big issue. TfL is the only agency that has this issue. Meanwhile I can check my LA, Phoenix, and SF trips from the UK without issue. Please fix this and allow us to manage our trip history and reload oyster from the US! I like to load fare onto my card before I land.

The TFL app has been overly-simplified. You can only look at journeys for today. It’s useless if you want to plan travel ahead - say - to go the airport. It also doesn’t show any live status. You have to use a third party app for that.
