The Fry 1000 Instant Words are a list of the most common words used for teaching reading, writing, and spelling. These high frequency words should be recognized instantly by readers. Dr. Edward B. Fry's Instant Words (which are often referred to as the "Fry Words") are the most common words used in English ranked in order of frequency. In 1996, Dr. Fry expanded on Dolch's sight word lists and research and published a book titled "Fry 1000 Instant Words." In his research, Dr. Fry found the following results: 25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published. 100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications. 300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material. Sound not working. Reset the app, restarted app and iPad, still no sound.
My Kindergartner-to-be needed to learn the top 100 Fry words. I tried many different apps but none hit the mark until this one. What’s great about this app: it speaks the word, it has all the Fry word lists, it allows customizing lists (for example I combined 10 built-in Fry lists into 1), it lets you change font/color and other settings, and best of all it has a flash card mode AND a game mode. In the latter it shows the word surrounded by X (you choose) number of other words, and the child picks which written word matches the spoken word. This gives much better variety and a different mental pathway than only using flash cards. Kudos to the developer - and all for only $0.99!!
I downloaded this at the recommendation of my daughter's school, and it's so basic with no instructions. What's the point of this app? If I use it like a flash card, a voice says the word first which prevents my daughter from "reading" it. I must be missing something, but there's no way to ask for help.
The audio does not work. And when it does it is so low that you have to put the phone to your ear just to hear it? Please fix it!
Cool,but boring. I used to think this app wasn’t cool but soon,my sister had to learn words then I showed my mom this app and she liked it! So now my sister uses this app and I am really proud.-Oliver day
Nice app. I wish there was a way to mark the cards off that have been mastered so they know what needs to be worked on.
Volume is too low
I don’t even want to know how many sight word apps I downloaded before finding this one. It does almost everything I need without a bunch of unnecessary games. Each set of Fry words is broken down into their 10 word list making it easy for me to make a favorite list for my kids to practice. My only complaint is I have to set it up on a different device for each kid as their practice words are all different and I don’t want to create my own list with sounds every week. If I could just create a quick list from all words that would be ideal. Regardless, I’m thankful I didn’t have to build an app myself.
Great app for working with my students on sight words!
This app is simply a blank screen with one fry word in the center. You tap the word and the app says the word out loud and then replaces it with the next word. You can customize it – find, capitalization, audio, etc. I can't imagine that it would be engaging for a kid but i'm sure there are some people who are less something just like this.
